Designing Distinction: The Moore Hotel Miami + The Art of Custom Hospitality Carpet

In the heart of Miami’s Design District, a historic 1920s Neoclassical building is reborn as The Hotel at The Moore Miami, a 13-suite boutique hotel that blends architectural heritage with modern luxury. Originally a furniture showroom and warehouse, the building now houses a social club, restaurant and a hotel that’s already earning global accolades in the hospitality design industry since opening in the fall of 2024.

Shaw Contract Hospitality partnered with the interior design firm Studio Collective to craft bespoke custom broadloom tufted carpet that serves as the design foundation of the hotel, bringing artistic warmth and individuality to the hotel corridor and guest room suites.

The Challenge: Renovating a Historic Building into a Modern Hotel

Renovating a nearly century-old building is never without challenges. The Moore’s fourth-floor hotel level revealed the quirks of its original wood-frame construction: no two rooms were the same size and included features such as curved walls and varying window sizes and shapes.

The location inspired a design aesthetic that was sophisticated yet relaxed while working with the framework of the historic building. “We wanted the rooms to feel like Miami,” said Leslie Kale, Creative Director and Partner Studio Collective. “Even though we’re in the arts district and not on the beach, our vision was to capture a beachy, sun-washed vibe elevated with warmth and character.”

The Solution: Custom Carpet Brings Hotel Design Vision to Life

Shaw Contract Hospitality’s Custom Design Studio collaborated with Studio Collective to bring this vision to life. From initial inspiration to installation, Kale says the custom carpet process was a collaborative and deeply creative design experience.

“It’s truly custom carpet-to-fit at its best,” Kale said. “The carpet is artwork on its own and shapes the entire hotel guest suite experience by becoming a central design feature.”

Located in the heart of the Miami Arts District, the hotel serves as a gathering point during high-profile events like Art Basel. This meant the design needed to extend beyond traditional hospitality functions to create an immersive, gallery-like experience to welcome both overnight guests and event visitors.

As guests exit the elevators, they are greeted by a bold corridor carpet from Shaw Contract Hospitality’s Synchronize custom broadloom collection. The design features a dynamic and playful birds-in-flight motif.

Studio Collective and The Moore envisioned each of the 13 guest suites as a floating pied-à-terre, with a welcoming “porch” that opens to the hotel’s main corridor.

“If the doors are open, you can look into the rooms. Each porch area is unique, varying in size and featuring a communal table, sofa and a fully stocked armoire. We aimed for the rooms to evoke the feeling of a Miami waterway, almost like walking down the dock peering onto the back of yachts lining the water,” Kale explained.

Inside each suite, the carpet pattern shifts to a softer, flowing design. Working from original watercolor artwork by a local Miami artist, Shaw Contract Hospitality translated the paintings into custom broadloom carpet patterns, each adapted to the room’s unique shape. Because every suite floor plan varies, each carpet layout was tailored to create a truly bespoke effect.

The USA-made carpet is a versatile choice for high-traffic hospitality spaces that need striking design with shortened lead times and long-term performance.

A Hospitality Design Triumph

The Moore Miami has quickly become a standout in the boutique hotel scene. Its thoughtful design, rooted in collaboration and creativity, has earned the 2025 Hospitality Design Award for Small Hotel, along with recognition from Condé Nast Traveler and Galerie Magazine.
