Beyond the Jobsite: Evaluating Flooring Integration for Prefabricated Bathroom Pods

Article written by: Frances Phillips, Senior Content Marketing Manager | Published by Shaw Contract

Across healthcare, hospitality and multifamily construction, project teams are being asked to do more with less. Labor shortages, compressed schedules and growing demand for new facilities are prompting the industry to explore alternative construction approaches. Modular construction has emerged as one method for addressing these challenges.

By moving portions of the building process into controlled manufacturing environments, modular construction creates opportunities for project teams to explore greater consistency, reduce on-site activity and support more predictable production schedules. These opportunities also require manufacturers, installers and material providers to collaborate in new ways.

This opportunity led to a collaboration between Shaw Contract, Diverzify and SurePods™, bringing together expertise in flooring innovation, installation and prefabricated construction. Together, the teams evaluated how a flooring solution could be integrated within SurePods' prefabricated bathroom pods, exploring how precision-cut flooring, installation expertise and performance evaluation could support the unique requirements of modular construction.

Understanding the Requirements of Modular Construction

Whether expanding a rural clinic, increasing patient capacity or responding to evolving community needs, healthcare organizations continue to explore ways to bring facilities online efficiently while maintaining quality and performance standards.

Modular construction offers one approach. By manufacturing building components off-site and assembling them at the project location, teams can gain greater control over production processes while exploring opportunities to improve schedule predictability and consistency.

At the same time, modular construction presents unique considerations. Materials must perform throughout manufacturing, transportation, storage and final installation. Components must fit precisely and consistently, and installation processes must be repeatable across multiple units. These requirements create opportunities to evaluate new approaches and technologies.

Building a Better Process Together

Recognizing the unique requirements of modular construction, SurePods, a leader in prefabricated bathroom pod manufacturing, partnered with Shaw Contract and commercial flooring contractor Diverzify to evaluate how flooring could be integrated into the manufacturing process.

Demonstrated in this recent installation video, each partner brought a distinct area of expertise:

Together, the teams focused on a shared objective: evaluating flooring installation approaches within a modular manufacturing environment and assessing their potential application across prefabricated bathroom pod production.

"Successful modular construction depends on more than precision manufacturing. It depends on partners who are willing to test, learn and innovate together,” Eric Zabel, Strategic Accounts, Diverzify.

From Healthcare Innovation to Modular Construction

At the center of the collaboration is Geometrix™, a patented Shaw Industries flooring innovation designed to support resilient sheet installation through precision measurement and custom cutting. Using laser measurement technology, Geometrix maps and measures a space, converts those measurements into a digital cut plan and delivers sheet flooring pre-cut and ready for installation.

"Originally developed to address challenges within healthcare environments, the technology aligns naturally with the needs of modular construction, where repeatability and precision are essential." Dave Bailey, Director of Healthcare Marketing, Shaw Contract

Through the SurePods collaboration, Shaw Contract explored how Geometrix™ could be applied within prefabricated bathroom pod production and evaluated how precision measurement and custom cutting could be incorporated into a controlled manufacturing environment.

Evaluating Performance Beyond the Factory Floor

A central focus of the collaboration was evaluating how flooring systems perform across the modular construction process.

Rather than simply applying an existing product within a modular environment, Shaw Contract, Diverzify and SurePods worked together to better understand how flooring solutions would perform throughout manufacturing, transportation and final installation. Shaw Industries' internal evaluation process included environmental chamber assessments, outdoor exposure testing and performance reviews designed to simulate conditions that may occur across the modular construction lifecycle.

These assessments provided additional insights into material performance and installation considerations within prefabricated construction environments.

Outcomes Explored Through Collaboration

The SurePods collaboration provided an opportunity to evaluate how flooring solutions could be integrated within modular construction workflows. Through testing, evaluation and real-world application, several areas for further evaluation and discussion emerged during the process:

Installation Efficiency

Precision-cut flooring was evaluated to reduce the time traditionally spent measuring and cutting material during installation, with the potential to streamline production workflows.

Process Consistency

Digital measurement and customized cutting plans were explored as tools to support greater repeatability across multiple pods and manufacturing cycles.

Workflow Simplification

Pre-planned installation approaches helped identify opportunities to reduce installation variables that can contribute to delays, rework and material waste.

Performance Evaluation

Joint testing and evaluation efforts provided insights into how flooring solutions may perform within modular construction environments and throughout multiple stages of the production process.

What This Means for the Future of Flooring in Modular Construction

As modular construction continues to evolve, collaborations that bring together manufacturers, installers and material providers can help the industry evaluate new approaches for addressing complex construction challenges.

“The collaboration between Shaw Contract, Diverzify and SurePods demonstrates the value of bringing together manufacturing expertise, installation knowledge and flooring innovation to evaluate new approaches within modular construction. By combining these perspectives, the team explored installation workflows, manufacturing considerations and the role flooring can play within prefabricated construction environments,” Ivy Liniger, Vice President of Strategic Accounts, Shaw Contract Healthcare

As project teams continue to explore modular construction methods, collaborations like this one can provide valuable insights into how products, processes and partners work together to support evolving construction needs.
