Transforming an Underutilized Space: How Entryway Carpet Tile Revitalized the 700 G Street LLC Atrium Lobby

Located in downtown Anchorage, Alaska, the original 700 G Street LLC atrium lobby, constructed in 1983, had the opportunity to be a dynamic and inviting space, but it wasn’t living up to that potential. Despite the high-rise building’s prime location and generous size, the atrium primarily functioned as a pass-through rather than a destination. Employees and visitors moved quickly through the lobby, a missed opportunity to engage with friends and collaborate with colleagues.

The atrium renovation at 700 G Street LLC by Spark Design, llc, an Anchorage-based architectural and interior design firm, revitalized the atrium to become a vibrant and bustling urban destination. Shaw Contract entryway carpet tile is a key component of the project's success.

The Challenge: Solving Acoustics and Comfort Challenges in a High-Rise Building Atrium

Several factors contributed to a lack of functionality in the existing atrium. The acoustics of the space, with its expansive granite floors and walls, created an intense reverberation that made holding everyday conversations difficult. Anchorage’s subarctic climate, combined with the stone floors and walls, resulted in a space that often felt cold and unwelcoming. The lobby’s small café tables were an afterthought and were not inviting or conducive to interaction, leaving the space underutilized.

The absence of an effective entryway system and carpet tiles led to maintenance and safety concerns in the lobby. Dirt, moisture and snow tracked in from outside frequently left the hard surface floors wet and dirty. The atrium lacked the comfort and practicality needed to encourage people to utilize the space,” according to a representative of the building’s property management company, JL Properties. “The lack of soft surfaces also contributed to the atrium's chilly atmosphere, making it even less inviting.”

The Solution: Entryway Carpet Tile, Thoughtful Design Enhancements

To revitalize the atrium, the design team was tasked with creating a space that would encourage and support community. The design focused on a solution that would improve acoustics, comfort and overall usability. Entryway carpet tile became a key component of the transformation.

“Removing the granite flooring was not an option in the project budget, so we opted for a combination of entryway carpet tile and field carpet tile installed over the existing surface,” said Jess Stine of Spark Design. “This not only created a softer, more inviting atmosphere but also significantly reduced noise levels, making the space feel more comfortable and conducive to conversation.”

A large expanse of entryway carpet tile spanning from the building’s entrance to the elevators benefits the atrium. Not only does the entryway carpet tile create impactful wayfinding, but it also provides a high-performance barrier against the Alaskan elements, trapping dirt, water, salt, gravel and silt before these materials can be tracked further into the building.

According to the property management company, the maintenance staff has noticed a significant improvement since the renovation. By stopping outdoor debris and moisture at the door, the new entryway carpet tile helps maintain the cleanliness and longevity of the surrounding carpet tile throughout the atrium and the entire building.

Beyond functionality, a neutral color palette was chosen for the walls and flooring, complemented by warm wood slat accents and camel leather furniture. This combination created a sense of warmth and sophistication, while biophilic design elements, such as tree planters and built-in greenery, added a refreshing natural touch to the space.

A variety of seating arrangements were introduced, including lounge chairs, raised booths with acoustic planks overhead and soft seating areas. These new arrangements allow individuals to choose how they want to use the space — whether for casual conversations, focused work or group meetings.

“This shift helped transform the atrium from a transient space into a true gathering place for both building occupants and visitors from the surrounding downtown area,” Stine added.

The Results: A Vibrant, Engaging Downtown Hub

What was once an overlooked space is now a dynamic hub where employees and visitors naturally gather. Comfortable seating, improved acoustics, and a welcoming experience supported by key artwork pieces, encourage people to pause, connect, and collaborate. Instead of simply passing through, individuals now stop for coffee, informal conversations or focused work sessions, making the space an integral part of daily life.

Beyond benefiting the building’s occupants, professionals from surrounding businesses now use the space for casual business gatherings, reinforcing its role as a vibrant destination in the community. The introduction of entryway carpet tile has further enhanced functionality by keeping floors dry, reducing slip hazards and lowering maintenance costs, making upkeep easier and more efficient.

The combination of timeless aesthetics and practical design elements creates a professional yet comfortable setting that invites people to linger, interact and make the most of this beautifully reimagined space.
