In the heart of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Lookout Valley Middle High School has long stood as a pillar of education and community. But in a building dating back to 1957, Principal Lee Ann McBryar knew that modernizing shared spaces was essential—not just for aesthetics, but for student wellbeing, staff morale, and community pride.

A Title I School with Big Dreams

Lookout Valley Middle High School is a Title I school, meaning it receives federal funding to support students from low-income families. This designation reflects the economic challenges many students face, but it also empowers the school to provide equitable educational opportunities. For Principal McBryar, this means ensuring that every student—regardless of background—has access to clean, modern, and inspiring learning environments.

“We want to make sure our children have the things they should have,” said Principal McBryar. “When they’re here with us eight hours a day, five days a week, they should feel comfortable and proud of their space. It should reflect what their life can be like.”

Purposeful Design for a Purposeful Space

Shaw Contract partnered with Lookout Valley Middle High School to revive its theater, a space rich in character and community use.

“The theater already had a mid-century modern vibe,” said Principal McBryar. “With walnut acoustic wood paneling and persimmon-colored carpet on the walls, it had charm. But the floor was worn and tired. Shaw Contract saw the potential and helped us elevate it.”

The StudioOne team, Shaw Contract’s in-house interior designers, curated multiple design palettes, complete with samples and digital mockups that incorporated existing wall colors and theater seating. The process was immersive and inclusive.

“I didn’t expect the selection process to feel so fancy,” Principal McBryar shared. “We laid out the samples in our media center and invited staff to vote. It was overwhelmingly clear which palette resonated—blue and black tones of the Essence Tile and Gilded Tile that complemented the space beautifully.”

Acoustic Benefits and Student Joy

The new carpet tile not only refreshed the space visually but also enhanced its acoustic performance. The impact was immediately felt during summer band camp.

“Our band kids were thrilled,” said Principal McBryar. “They noticed how nice and new it looked. Students who’ve been here since middle school are proud of how their school is evolving.”

A Hub for Arts and Community

The theater isn’t just a school space—it’s a community hub. From band concerts to seasonal plays, it draws packed crowds. “It’s standing-room only during performances,” Principal McBryar noted. “This upgrade makes it even more inviting.”

The school’s arts resurgence, led by a passionate theater teacher, has brought new life to the space. With productions planned for fall and spring, the carpet tile will be showcased to hundreds of families and community members.

Teachers spend long hours at school, and Principal McBryar wanted the space to feel like home. “We’ve painted our halls, upgraded our kitchen, and now the theater. Every space should feel cared for.”

The transformation has boosted staff morale and reinforced a sense of pride. “It’s the little things—like fresh paint and new carpet—that make a big difference,” Principal McBryar said.

The Impact of One Space

The carpet tile installation was part of a larger wave of generosity. From grants to donations, Lookout Valley experienced what Principal McBryar called “the year of giving.” Shaw Contract’s contribution was a meaningful part of that story.

“We’ve never had so many people take notice of us,” Principal McBryar reflected. “This partnership with Shaw Contract allowed us to beautify our space and show our students that they matter.”

This project is a testament to how thoughtful design and community support can transform a school. The new carpet tile in the theater has improved acoustics, enhanced aesthetics, and created a space where students and staff feel valued.
